Editing Four - 26/11/2010

I was working completely on protools today, putting together all the ideas i have had for the soundtrack, after realising that my orignal idea may not work to full effect. I have found used sound effects along with a recorded guitar part section that i recorded on to protools myself.
The opening section for the music was 30 seconds long, i kept this section very similar to my original idea of having soft guitar music playing in the background, amazingly a first draft of the finger picking fitted the opening half of the trailer perfectly. I felt it was to plain though and didn't build up enough tension, so i added a sound effect of a record player static, i though this made the music seem old and creepy, adding the right atmosphere. At first the static was to loud against the music, so i turned the static down and brought the decibels of the guitar piece up using the gain tool on protools, this ment i could get it perfect.
This music stops as the gate closes, i thought this was a god stopping place, as it is sudden and juxtaposes against the light music. after this comes a heart beat to build tension, along with a mans breathing, to make it seem like some one is watching Kate. These are all be from found sound effects.
At the start of the trailer it shows a lovely street scene, which is suddenly interrupted by and eye for about two seconds, this was to make people jump and build tension, i felt it needed a bit more though to help, so i am adding sound effects when the eye appears, either like a record player scratch or an electric flutter 2, i think the electric flutter 2 works best as it is more obvious and dramatic adding to the genre of Thriller and Horror.

Editing Three - 23/11/2010

We only had an hour today and as i was still waiting on parts of the trailer to become finished to understand the timings for the soundtrack i decided to carry on looking for soundeffects, after my slight change in plan for the end part of the sound track, i found some really great ones in ilife and apple loops for soundtrack pro. I was mainly looking for follio noises like breathing or ambient noises like radios crackling, things that can be layered over the top of the drums to create really eerie off putting noises, adding to the tension i want to create. I think what i have found will be really great and i found over 30 sound effects that i can use and play with next lesson when the trailer is finished so i have timings.

Soundtrack ideas Two

After working on the sound track in lesson time, i realised that going down my orignal route of having the guitar carrying on after the start of the trailer, but becoming electric and heavy, i'm unsure of if this will really fit, i liked the idea of it keeping in time with the short takes, but the heart beat or drums can do that, but i'd prefer the drums to keep in time with the short takes and trying to put the guitars and drums together i felt was to much. Though most trailers music is very specific, like the harry potter trailers which have a string section, i didn't feel it fitted in after the start of the soundtrack, which the group and i really liked. Also the genre of the trailer didn't quite go with my original idea, though it works for thriller fantasies like harry potter, i didn't think it would really work for thriller horrors, like our trailer, the sound track are still epic and building, but much simpler focussing on one sound, like the drums in inception, something i felt was really effective, this means i am going to focus on getting the drums and heart beats recorded for the trailer, along with spooky sound effects i found last lesson, to give a added distorted effect, something i felt worked really well within the strangers trailer, when the music seems to get stuck on repeat and cracks and breaks up. i think it helps to build tension as the audience become unsure of what is going on, much like with the short takes they are so short people don't get the full picture, teaming these to ideas together i think we will create a perfect feeling for our trailer, fitting well with the genre of thriller horror.

Editing Two - 19/11/2010

Today it we carried on with the editting and final touches to our film trailer, it's Aimee's job to edit our trailer together on final cut pro, with the rest of the group giving help or a little input when Aimee needed. We watched over what we had so far and i felt it looked really great and that Aimee was defaintly editing it in the right direction. There were only a few things that needed to be changed that Aimee was planning on working on this lesson anyway, such as some shots were to long, or with Kate closing the door shot, she made a slight face as the shot ended, which didn't look right and so we all suggested ways of cutting it or changing it slightly so it didn't look odd, Also so shots were to slow or to bright, so Aimee used fianl cut pro to edit the shots, to make them fit better with the genre.
The first thing i went to do was to get a guitar to carry on recording bits for the trailer and trial my ideas to the group. At first i couldn't record the sound track straight away as i was unsure of how long the trailer would be, as Aimee hadn't cut to down shots yet, so i decided to wait till we had a rough idea of trailer length to start properlly recording, whilst waiting i just showed people what i had already, the light guitar finger picking at the start and how it builds up towards the end and spoke about my ideas, for other sound effects.
As Aimee got on with editing, with the rest of the group chipping in when she needed help. she was changing the contrast of some shots. With one of the shots of Kate running was very bright even when editted, the rest of the group were a little worried about this as they didn't think it would fit in with the genre and the rest of the trailer which was dark, but i told them that trailers are rarely in chrological order, so it didn't matter if it was a little sunny, but it still looked creepy. Aimee also had an idea about the beginning of the trailer to prevent it from looking to normal, as it starts off lovely and happy, to put people at a false state of relax, but it was looking a little boring, so Aimee said she had seen a trailer for a film called "A Stranger Calls" where it starts off ok, but uses a flash of a short take of an eye. the group really liked this suggestion and so agreed to test it out, we liked it so decided to have it in our fianl trailer even though it wasn't on our story board.
I got on with the sound track, by recording a demo of my orignal guitar idea on protools, this was only a rough cut so that i could see how long each part of the sound track could roughly be and start testing out drums and other sound effects. The start part of the soft guitar finger picking, which would be played over the top of the happy street shots could roughly go to about 30 seconds, which i felt was long enough. The build up guitar section that would go over the fast cuts could be stretched and made longer if needed and i would also add a drum beat as i have siad before and the group has also disscussed, but i needed to know how long each short take would be so i could fit the beat of the strumming and the beat in time, give the most impact to the shots, i estimated 3 seconds for each shot. I spoke to Aimee about this, as the trailer was nearly finished, she tried to change the shots to be in time, but some just couldn't be cut down any shorter than Aimee already had, as then they weren't effective. This ment that not all the short cuts were the same length, this ment that i couldn't time a gutiar beat to them well enough, as it just looked a little messy when i tried and there was no way Aimee couldn't edit the trailer to make them all the same length as some didn't look right short and others couldn't be made longer due to having to have certian things cut out. this also ment that i may not be able to time a drum beat to it well enough aswell, but i carried on trying to work on the right kind of drum beat effect in protools, using the boom kit, which i thought the most effective part of this was the kick tool when on the urban 1 setting, i thought that even though i couldn't fit the guitar in time with the shots well enough, i may be able to build up a good enough drum beat, that may not have to keep in time, just be there in the background and biuld tension. I had origanlly worked on it to go along with a guitar, which luara helped me with, as she is director i asked for her opion and what sounded better, but felt like i could adapt my ideas easily, i was also using the sound effect of a bass out of the garage band apllication, the best bass to go alongside the drums and guitar was the subsythn bass, as it sounded really deep, similar to the drums i already had and reminded me a bit of the sound effects used on the inception trailer. Even if we can't use the guitar parts i wrote for the second half of the trailer i think we will still use the drums idea the group had really liked.
The group also had disscussed earlyer certain sound effects for the trailer, such as heavy breathing and heart beats for the tension. We already had the sound effect recoreded of a gate closing which we did using my camera on location. To find these sound effects that the group wanted i looked i went in to the audio section and looked in sound track pro, i then went in to apple loops and the ilife section for sound effects. i found heart beat effect which i felt would work really well, either on it's own in a section of the trailer that we had prevously disscussed to be silent with just heart beats or heavy breathing, to help build tnesion before the big build up, but now that i am considering not using the guitars we may uses it in other areas, to help add atmosphere. i then foung to further sounds effects that could be used within the trailer, star drive, radio tunning and volcaneo. i thought all of these sound effects would help with building tension and atmosphere
I have been thinking about the opening to keep the same pretty tune i orignally planned to keep, but every time the eye that Aimee placed in flashes up the music will become distorted a bit like in the strangers trailer when they get attacked it becomes distorted. For the end i defiantly think it needs a beat to keep in time with the shots like a heart beat, but we may not be able to cut the shots down, so i will keep on working on this. i also think i will add the sound effects i have found in to the music, as after doing some research some trailers don't have an traditional soundtrack and instead have a collection of atmosphereic sound effects to build tension. i think a white noise might work really well.

Logo Ideas

These are the logo ideas that Laura and Hannah came up with, whilst Aimee was editing. We felt that it had to be simple and Aimee suggested it be a camera silhouette as it represents film and when looking at some examples, it seemed a popular design idea. I also felt it would look classic and professional, if we didn't over complicate things.

IDEA ONE
this was the first design they came up with, it isn't of the right type of camera, and looks to small and simple, as if we didn't put any thought in to it. Though the red text does contrast well against the black and white, it dosen't stand out enough, which a producer logo needs to do, as they want to show people that they were involved and make money off it. This wasn't my favorite, but it was only their first go.

IDEA TWO

I felt this was a step in the right direction, it is of an actually filming camera and the colours are really great choices, as they are neutral, yet not boring so people would notice the symbol. I also like the choice of text, but am unsure on wether it fits in with our movie or wether a producer would actually have this type of logo. But what does look professional is the light reflecting off the top it really makes it look real and classic.

IDEA THREE

this was the best of all the logos i felt, as it looked just like the logos you see when watching a film, the shadow of a person with a camera looks like a professional shot and that it was made for us or at least to put in to a logo, i like the text used as it is very formal and professional. The use of black and white is very simple and classic, not over fussed, something which producer logos aren't, they need to catch peoples eye, but at the same time not distract from what they are about to see. So that is why i voted for this image, but the rest of the group felt idea two was the better, which i did also like.

Editing - 16/11/2010

Today we decided to dedicate completely to editing our trailer together for the final piece. As we couldn't all edit and it's Aimee's job within the team to edit, something we decided on in our first we all took on our own roles so we could maximise our efficacy.
Before we got with any of our tasks, we sat and watched the film we had captured over the weekend and the re-shoots of close ups on Kate and discussed what we like and didn't like, i was really surprised at how well the filming from the weekend came out, even though it was only film on my Camcorder which isn't as powerful as the schools own cameras. We noticed a few mistakes within some shots, such as being able to see my hand in a shot that we thought we'd managed not get me in, it was the gate shot, but Aimee can crop this out when putting the trailer together. All the film was put on to the Mac's on Aimee's area so she could edit easily. the film on my camera couldn't be uploaded straight to fianl cut pro straight away, so Aimee uploaded it to Imovie, then transfering it to final cut pro.
We are using Final Cut Pro to edit everything together, as we find it the easiest to use, we all had a short introduction on how to use it, then we left Aimee to get on with editing the film according to our storyboard. I got on looking for a templates that we could place our producer logo on to, along with any text within the trailer, such as tag lines, it had to be something dark and eerie, with a good transition i looked in the effects section, where there is a big selection, for end titles and openings, but we just needed one that could easily slot in to our trailer. I looked in a folder named Light, i really like the templates in this folder, as it looked a bit like a camera flash, something we as a group had wanted in our trailer to link in with the storyline. I told Hannah and Laura about it and showed them, as they were making the producer logo, that would slot in to this template, they really liked it, and so we chose to use it.
Laura and Hannah carried on there research on logos, while Aimee edited and i got a guitar to record the soundtrack. I discussed with the music teacher about creating a drum beat in the background and said it was best to do it on the computer in some programs like garage band, so i will look further in to that.
After Laura and Hannah had finished making the logos in photoshop they put it to a vote, i liked the man and the camera the most, as i thought it look classic and simple, like most producer logos, but the rest of the group preferred the camera in a circle, which looks more futuristic and personal, so we went with that choice.
Once we had all finished our own jobs, or couldn't progress any further with them, like recording the soundtrack as i wasn't allowed to make noise as filming was going on next door, we went over to help Aimee and see what she had done so far, she had completed the first half of the trailer of all the happy street scenes and was just trying to place together the quickening shots, with the right bits of film. It's looking really good so far.
As i couldn't really record any music in this lesson, due to not being able to make noise as someone was recording next door, i instead looked in to how to use such programs as pro tools and garage band, i found some really usefull tools and effects, which i will use in further detail next lesson.

Filming Three - 9/11/2010

Today in our media lesson we had a chance to re-film the head shots we had previously filmed, but felt didn't work well enough or that they didn't reflect the genre and feel we want for the trailer when watching them back. We went up to the same location we had previously filmed on, The mound, with a media teacher. It didn't take us long at all to film these shots we needed, as we had previously tryed to film the same shots, so had learnt from our previous mistakes and clearly understood how to get what we wanted out of the shots. I got Kate ready for the filming, by bringing in her costume and explaining to her the shots we had planned to film for that day, with the help of Aimee we quickly brief her on how she should re-act with the camera.
Hannah re filmed the shots of Kate close up, looking scared, we took our time on this to make sure we got the best shots, as we are unsure if we can film again, so this time we really want to get the best out of our time, so Laura the director talked through her facial expressions and what we needed. After this we moved on to an extreme close up on Kate's eye, like in saw films, this worked better than just having loads of close ups of her looking scared as they all looked the same and boring, this also puts the audience on edge as you can't see what Kate is seeing, also it really focusses on one thing, so the audience can't look away. The eye is also gross looking with all the viens in it. I am unsure of who came up with this, as i think it was a group effort when thinking threw shots, but Aimee brought it up as we were filming i think. We then switched to a shot of Kate looking round frantically, we tried to frame it so it was just her face, or part of her face, but this didn't work as just kept going out of the camera frame when looking round, so Hannah brought the camera out a little bit so it wasn't as an extreme close up, but still you could only see her face nothing else, this makes the shot more intense i feel and you can clearly see the panic on her face.
That was the end of all the filming we needed, also it was getting to cold for Kate to be outside in just a dress so we wrapped up on filming. Me and Aimee stayed behind to but up the shots filmed from today and take them off the tape and place them on a memory stick. I think we can start editing all our trailer together now, as i feel we have enough shots and they are all of the quality we wanted.

Filming Two - 7/11/2010

Today we decided to try and film the rest of the shots for the trailer that we couldn't film in school, due to the location. So today we filmed on several locations, My street and many different wooded areas within the Wedge. Most the shots filmed today were wide shots, as we couldn't do wide shots at school due to the area of wood we have at school not being large enough to film good wide shots without getting something unwanted in shot. We all took on the roles we had previously agreed at the start of the course.
The first location used, was my road. This was for our establishing shot at the beginning, we felt my road would be easiest to use as it was near by and t looks like an ordinary street, as the first impression we want to give off is it's a normal nice day. When setting up the camera we realised that the road was not wide enough to get a good long and wide shot of the road, this resulted in us trying to find an entry we could back in to, so Hannah whilst filming could get a good enough shot of the street for the establishing shot. The entry was a little bit dark, but i tried to help with reflect the sun off a piece of paper to create light, as we weren't concentrating on sound, as it's all going to be added on in the end. Whilst filming w had a few problems when getting this shot, as cars and people kept getting in to shot and we just wanted it to be a plain establishing shot. The group decided that Hannah should pan the camera down the street, as we all felt it was really effective. we then moved on to a the close up door and key shot, the group discussed this at length on how we wanted it to look, originally i had thought it would look good as a close up on the key in the door, as Kate locks it, showing her hands and arms, Laura wanted a mid-shot of her locking the door, so you could see her walk away, Aimee and Hannah just wanted a close up of the keys and the door, we tried all the ways. The first shots were of the keys in the door, which looked to dull and we felt when watching them back that they would grab an audiences attention enough, at the beginning. So we tried Kate locking the door and walking away, which we felt worked much better, as you understood who we were concentrating on, like an establishing shot of the main actress.
We then moved on to our second location The Wedge, this was a great place to film as it was local and had a lot of great areas to film, places that were heavily wooded, good fields, place with paths and without, this ment we didn't need to travel far when filming and that we could get everything most of our wide shots finished. As we walked to location i noticed the sun set, i pointed out to our director Laura and our camera woman Hannah and they decided to film it as an extra shot that was unplanned, but the lighting looked slightly uplifting as it was really bright, but it was going down and getting dark, so it reflected she would be trapped soon. We then went on looking for a gate and field for Kate to walk through, we found a good one on a public right of way path, as the trees surrounding it were all bear and looked like stereotypical horror film stripped back look on the trees. We filmed Kate walking through the gate, then we re-shot the gate closing. I held the gate just off from shot so you could see me, then laura told me when to let go, the first time we filmed it, hannah caught my hand in frame, be when we re-shot it, it came out well. We then carried on to get some good wide shots of the wood, deeper in the wooded area. We got shots of Kate walking through the trees, still calm, me and the director walked Kate to where we wanted her to come from, with the help of hannah telling us if she could see us, as if Kate was emerging from the wood. We did a couple takes for this, one of her walking towards the camera and one of her walking away. We then moved on to a different par of the woods, to film a sort of establishing shot for the woods, it was in a really bare tunnel of trees, which had all started to attach at the top, so it looked very grey, especially without their leaves. Hannah took a static shot and a pan shot, Aimee helped to create sound effects in the background that we may use, as she snapped twigs. We then set up for a wide shot of Kate running paniced through the woods, we found this hard, as she ran to fast, so Hannah couldn't get enough camera time of her, so we tried to slow her running down a bit, but i was worried it looked to much like she was just walking, but we'll have to wait and see when we edit. As it was starting to get dark we spilt off in to different groups, Aimee and Laura went to set up the shrine scene while i painted my hand red to make it look like blod and placed it on a tree, this is going to be a short take, the first one hannah filmed was ten seconds long and of just a red hand print, which i felt was more effective, the second shot was a smudged dragged hand print, but we didn't feel it looked clear enough like a hand. Once this was done we went over to help Aimee and Laura finish the shrine, we hung pictures of Kate ff tree branches using pink string, it looked sort of like a fairy shrine, but at the same time creepy as the trees were bear of leaves and it was getting dark. Hannah took a couple shots of the shrine on it's own, then Laura directed Kate to how she should react to the shrine, i helped by suggesting Kate should turn around to look at all of them. We got some really good final shots for this.
This was the end of the shoot for today, i feel we completed alot of the film work and all we need now is to re-do some head shots and we can start editing.
