22/10/2010 - Filming

Today was our first day of filming, with a view to use the film in our final trailer. Today's filming was decided with the group as mostly close up shots. The equipment we used today was the the tripod and camera, as we decided not to use the sound recording equipment on today's shoot.
We had to do to film mostly close ups today, due to the location of filming and the time of day, also because we wanted the best quality used on the close ups. Our location was the most wooded area in the school, which is good as in our transcript and storyboard, the girl gets lost in a woods, but the area didn't have enough trees to do any wide shots and also sits right next to a busy road and so we decided not to record sounds, as one we are having a sound track and no real sound and two the road would of been picked up too much, spoiling every shot.
All our roles for the trailer were decided before hand in a previous meeting before the summer. Hannah took on her role as the camera woman, working with the camera to get the best shots and the best places to put the camera for the shots and Laura worked well in her directing role for the trailer, directing Kate our actress and Hannah on camera. While Aimee helped to assist Laura, by focusing on the shots we had to film and helping Laura with decisions. As we weren't recording sound, i didn't need to get out the boom mic, so instead i tried to help by pitching in, by getting the costume for the actress and any props needed, i also helped to talk Kate through the scene we were filming. We all worked as a team and if someone was struggling we would all help them, if Hannah was struggling with how to get the best out of the camera or if Laura needed extra help on making a decision, we all pitched in to get the best. I feel we worked really well as a team, as we knew what we wanted out of the shots we were filming and the overall out come.
today we filmed most of the close up shots and some of the shots we want to use in the short take part of the trailer, such as Kate running past camera. The running past camera shot was something we tired a few times to get right as we were unsure of the best way of doing it. So we tired with Kate walking past the camera, which didn't give us a long enough shot, or enough of an impact, so then someone had the idea of having the camera follow Kate as she ran, this was a big job for Hannah our camera woman, as she had to keep up with Kate and get a good shot, it took a couple of takes of Hannah running behind kate,(some of which the rest of the crew accidentally get in, we will have to remember where the best place to stand is) we worked as a group to come up with a way to get the smoothest shot, something Hannah pulled of really well, when looking back over our recordings, as i feel these are some of the most impressive scenes we have so far.
We also decided to film the point of view shot, when the man is following her, as we felt the location was perfect, we had good enough trees to hide behind , but enough clearing to get a good view of Kate. For these shots Hannah took the camera off the tripod, as in the storyboard we decided to make it a hand held shot to make it seem more like someone is watching her by making it slightly joulty. For this shot we will also add heavy breathing, to really give the right effect.
When filming the close ups of Kate's face, with her looking round, or being scared we just kept the camera rolling, while Laura and the group gave directions to what we wanted in each scene, as there was no sound recording we could do this, that meant that if something wasn't working, instead of cutting we could just keep going, meaning we have a lot of film to edit with and a lot of film, which has potential to be really great.
This was a really great start to our filming and now we are discussing when we can go out and film more in a better wooded area, so we can film the bigger scenes, we are also thinking about the sound track and added sound effects.

Sound Track Ideas One

I have been given the task of recording the sound within the trailer and the soundtrack. This means i have been looking closely at what i have to do to get the best result for both tasks. In regards to recording background noise for the trailer, such as birds or cars, i think it would be easier to put all that sound on afterwards, due to continuity when the shots cut together, also when filming we may pick up some unwanted sound like we did in our first draft of cars passing by, so i think we are going to record all background noise separately with a boom, such as birds or normal street noises so that we can choose what we want to put on the final shot or use some of the many sound effects available when editing it all together. This means when filming we wont be using any sound equipment, instead i will help take care of lighting as well.
With the soundtrack i had some ideas and so did the group, we all have agreed on it starting off slow and mellow and building up as the trailer builds. As it builds we'd introduce electric guitar, drums and bass and towards the end we want the drums to create almost a heart beat effect. towards the end of the trailer we would have alot of short takes, as each take changed there would be a loud beat like dum dum dum (scene change) DUM dum dum dum (scene change) Dum. i am working on the guitar parts, which i think i have sorted, i just need to talk to the group to figure out timings.

Final Film Poster - Group

This is a combination of all the groups drafts. I feel this has a really great impact and conveys the genre and story line of the film really well. It fits with all the conventions of a normal poster it has, a billing block, a title, the stars name, a release date, a tag line and a main image.
The black background really makes Laura's title and the other white text stand out. It also fits well with the horror genre. I really like Laura's title and the effect of liquify she used on it, it makes it seem really ghostly. The billing block looks really professional as well, as we used a found template, which really helped us. I like the new placement of the release date, as a lot of posters seem to put it there and i feel it stands out well. Also the new way we have put Kate's name at the top as the only actor, but also instead of having it going down, we stretched it out along the top, otherwise everything on the poster looked to centralized, now it looks really effective. The tag line was Aimee's and instead of putting it in the stereotypical horror genre text chiller, i felt putting it in a more classic looking text would make it stand out and it still looks slightly horror like, but in a less obvious way, especially combined with the red colour and the bevel emboss effect. We also replaced the old central image on the heart, with Laura's full length image of Kate as it had more impact, and stands out against the other photos around it. Overall i think this is perfect to represent our film.

Final Film Magazine - Group

This is the final magazine cover, which is a combination of all the drafts the group has done together. I really like this magazine front cover, as i feel it would stand out well on a magazine stand and be very appealing to buyers. It fits all the conventions of a normal film magazine cover, with lots of different effects used to achieve a very polished look. The central image is really eye catching, it is take from the second photo shoot we dd with a green screen. It is one of Aimee's which she also edited herself. The Masthead looks really impressive, and would defiantly standout well against of film magazines, it looks very professional and was made by Aimee. The text around the image, is a combination of everyone's front pages, as we all had something of a high standard on our film magazines, so it was only right to combine them to get the best quality. The colour scheme on the magazine works well to as it fits in with the horror genre, which we made out was a magazine special for Halloween, i think this was a great idea as it means we can play on the the promotional package more in the sway of our horror genre. Over all it is well represented, looks really professional and was a real team effort.

Meeting Log Four - Final Poster and Magazine

Our fourth meeting is about choosing our final everything, Poster, Magazine, Name, Tag line and Date. As we have all finished our final drafts and have been working on our own ideas, we decided to have a meeting to either combine some ideas or choose someones work as the overall best. We all printed off our final versions of our posters and magazines, with our own title and tag lines on them. We took our time and looked over each persons final poster of magazine and evaluated the good and bad points of each one, this was so we could get the best result and overall finish for our final group work.

The first thing we did was look at the posters, we talked about everyone's poster and our favirote bits from each and what we needed to have on the poster, to fit the conventions and make it look like a horror film poster. The first thing we looked at on the poster was the films title, a very important and key part to a film. The titles that were on offer were, "Flashing Trees" i didn't likes this as i felt it sounded to comic and the rest of the group didn't pick it, "Picture Perfect" though i liked my own title it wasn't picked by the group as it could sound a bit romantic, "One day" was Hannah's title, i did like this title, but like with mine it didn't fit the horror genre, it could be seen as romantic, Then Laura's "Click" which we all felt fitted and worked really well. As it's simple and snappy, one would, one sylabul, also it fits in with the idea of our film, that someone is following her with a camera, so the group decided on this. We also liked the way Laura presented the title on her posters, so we decided to keep the font and use of liquefy she uses. We then moved on to the Tag line, which is another important part of a film poster, as it gives a little more information away and can interest an audience in to seeing the film, so the tag line had to be just right. after looking at every ones we choose Aimee's "It lies beneath the trees" as we feel it has the right effect and also links to where we will be filming in the woods, this suggest something about the film, without giving to much away. When choosing what image will be on our poster the group were tied as me and Aimee really liked Laura's image and Hannah and Laura picked my heart images and the layout they were in. so we asked the teacher how we should decided and she suggested many ways, like evaluating both and which one we feel with give us more marks, but in the end we deiced to combine both poster images. Using my layout of a heart and the images within it, but using Laura's image as the main picture within the heart. This meant we would get a better over all finish. Me and Laura decided that we would work on the end poster together, as we are combing the most off our own draft posters. We decided to just use Kate's name at the top as she is the only actor within the trailer. We also need to work on the billing block, i managed to get a really good template for a billing block, so now we are just trying to fill it with information to make it look like a real billing block, stating every ones roles within the making. I also think we need to production logos, like Disney and Pixar use, for our own trailer and billing block.

When thinking about our magazine film cover, we choose a Masthead first. We chose Aimee's Masthead "Film Lovers" Not only because it is a perfect title for a film magazine, as it express a love for films, which is what we want people to be like if the by this magazine. Another reason we chose this Masthead is the quality of the design, it looks like a professional Masthead and i like the use of the heart representing love, it's a funny pun. The rest of the group also agreed that this was the best Masthead to use. We then started what images fits the magazine best and can still show the horror genre and story to our film. After looking at everyone's we decided none of the images really stood out for us or didn't reflect the feel we wanted in the magazine. Then Aimee showed the group some of her drafts with different images she had taken and manipulated, one of the images Aimee had we felt really fitted the brief we had, to be interesting enough to stand out on a magazine, whilst keeping to the genre. Even though she hadn't picked it for her final draft the group really liked it so now we are using it as our final image. After picking the image and title we had to think about the conventions to really add to the magazines finishing touches. so we looked at everyone's structure and choices of left hand thirds, with the over all structure i really think Aimee had done a good job at making it look cohesive and clear, whilst making it interesting, but there were a few things that the rest of the group could input on, such as different uses of texts and information on the magazine and how we wanted certain things presented. The way i had chosen to do Saw 3D with the chiller text and the liquefy to make it look like blood and the original title, was liked by the group and so this was put on to the magazine. Aimee's use of a plug bar at the bottom looked really good so we kept that in, as i feel it makes it look really professional. As a group we all felt the bar-code and price, along with any other information like that should be kept together on the magazine, so they are all easy to find and it also looks professional. For the main title for the film, we felt using the same way we did on the poster, would work best as then it will be recognizable, like iconography. We also decided to place the title under the image, so not to distract from the impact. I also really liked something off Hannah's magazine cover, the 39 horror films, as most magazines seem to do some sort of list and i also like the number, as it was odd. After choosing all of this to go on the magazine, we realized that it was all to do with the horror genre and as most film magazines cover all genres, not focusing on one, we wanted to fit in with conventions by adding "Massive horror special" as it is coming out around Halloween like the film. This was to make sure people new our magazine wasn't always all about horror, which just wouldn't have fitted conventions.

When we had all agreed on how our poster and magazine should look for our final drafts, we decided who was going to do what for the improvements. As me and Laura had the most of our own ideas on the poster, we went off to change and develop it together and Hannah and Aimee had the most ideas on the magazines so they also went off and worked together. We did this so the poster and magazine would be finished quicker, giving us more time to focus on filming.

Draft Five - Magazine Cover Final

This magazine cover is very similar to my fourth draft, but i have changed about the magazines left hand third, as i felt it was a bit empty still and didn't look like a real magazine yet. So added "Free Poster" with this i wanted to make it look like a stamp, as if someone hand stuck it on after, so that the readers would think they were really getting there monies worth. For this section i choose the font Stencil, as i felt it had the most impact and worked well with my idea of the information being stuck on. To get the effects on it i used screen inner glow, then a gradient overlay of yellow, to match with the colour scheme, which in blending option i choose overlay, so that it wouldn't be too bright and added a drop shadow. I really think this last piece of text finishes the front cover well as it feels full, i have chosen this to be my final front cover that i will submit to the group and then we will work as a team to choose the best, or combine ideas to come up with a magazine cover.

Draft Six - Poster

This is my final poster draft i think, as i feel i have achieved and tested out everything i wanted, to get to this point, the poster works well to express the films premis i feel. I changed the background colour to a lighter blue, as i felt he photographs were already dark and they were being taken over by such a dark background, it does go against genre a little bit, but i think it was more important that the audience be able to see the pictures properly, but it stil stick with conventions as it is a dark colour. I also worked on the blood on this poster, after i had tested a few different ways of doing it, i put it to work on this poster using the brush i felt worked best during my tests. I really think this works well and looks alot like actual dripping blood. i also used the idea of making sure all the elements of the poster worked together, by making the blood drip down on to the title, i really think this looks effective, as it makes the blood look even more like blood and helps fit in with the genre of Horror. I also added a blood smudge behind the release date to make it stand out, as the red really contrast with the use of red and links everything to the horror genre. Another big change was the fact i change the title back to the old version, i just felt it being in red like my fifth draft didn't work and over powered the whole poster, i aslo thought it made it look really cheesy, which isn't what i'm going for. i also embossed the tag line in red using the chiller font this ment it stood out against Kate's name and would catch people's eyes an important thing when making a poster for a film, as you want as many people as you can see it. The billing block still isn't the best as i don't feel it looks professional, but this is the best i could do, i made it with plain font, so it wouldn't be distracting and put everyone's name in it. this is my final draft and will submit it to the group when we make our final decision with our promotional pack.

Edited Images 4

This was my first attempt at using Hue and Saturation to get rid of the green screen behind Kate, but it didn't work right due to the green screen not just being green, so when i picked that colour to turn down when using Hue and Saturation it didn't work right, i had a few more attempts with using this effect on the same picture but i never got it fully black int he background, something i will have to work on.
This was my second attempt to change the green background using the Hue and saturation editing mode. The background still didn't go fully black like how i first wanted it. I left the grey background it went to, as i thought it still look good, she still looks isolated and on her own. I then used the filter options in sketch and added the water paper effect to the picture, to make it stand out better against teh grey background. I aslo felt that it gave her a much more innocent look, with the white glow, something i created by using the diffused glow effect.

On this image i once again used hue and Saturation on the background to try and make the background darker and fit in with the genre of horror for the poster image. It still didn't get rid of all the green like in previous images and instead turned the background greyish, but i still like the effect it creates, as it looks very harsh and lonely. I then used the selective colour tool on Kate's face to stop her looking so red, as when taking photos the light mabe her face look a little red, when i want her to look pale and innocent, this also helped to make her look more defined.

This is the same as the previous image i just added moition blur as i thought it created a really eye catching effect, that would interest and audience as they walked past the posters. Also i thought it captured the idea of someone flowing her with a camera well, as sometimes photos come out blured, as if he had to hide as he took a photo.

On this image of Kate, i have edited the black to cover over the green screen, so that she looks like she has been plunged in to darkness, fitting in with the storyline of being alone in the woods in darkness. The darkness will hopefully also represent and show the genre of choice which is horror, so that when i make another draft of my film poster it will look like a horror and not a romantic film, something i have been trying to make sure comes across from the start. To change the whole background in to black i used the tool Hue and Saturation, this meant i could turn down the green in the green screen whilst keeping Kate clear in the middle. I then used diffused glow on the rest of the image so that her face really stands and glows out of the darkness. I will probably use this image as the central image on the poster, as i feel it looks the best and really stands out, due to the high quality.

Photoshop - Blood Drip Test

Today in photo shop i have been working on the blood dripping that i have been using on the heart, as each time it either dosen't look like blood or looks really stuck on, when i really want it to loook like it is pouring out of the pictures. So to get the best result i have been practiing with several different brushes and effects. These three are the best of the bunch and i think that the bevel emboss effect works the best also. The top one looks ok, but would only work for a slight graze, i want it to look like it is pouring out, so i wont use the brush 15 from the wet media stock. the second drip looks really good i think, but the bevel emboss effect dosen't work with this, so if i did use it it wouldn't stnad out the most, also when using liquify i was finding it hard to make it look like it was dripping, do i might not use this. The third one looks really i good, both with and without the bevel emboss effect, the brush i used was much thicker and gave out biggger spots when clicked, i think this helped with the over all look, i feel that this is the most effective and will be using this on further drafts of the poster.

Lesson 5/10/2010 - Second Shoot

Today we took our second photo shoot, so that we could improve on the images we already have for our poster and magazine cover. As we felt that we needed so higher quality photos for our magazine and posters, so that we can achieve the best for our promotional package. We all took photos of Kate in the media suite, using a green screen, artificial light and a high quality cameras.
Here are some of the images i took as an improvement on my original images, that i had planned to re-take, also as a group we have shared some images between ourselves so that we can get the best overall finish. These are a selection of my best images.

Draft Five - Poster

I have tried to change all the things i didn't like on my last draft poster. I have missed off the billing block and release date on this draft, as this was just a test to see how my improvements would look and if they worked.

The first thing i changed on this draft was the tag line. i kept the the colour and font as i felt this worked on the poster and put across the genre of horror, instead i left of the text effect of the bevel emboss and tryed to make it look a little brighter against the dark background. I like it being lighter against the dark background, but i don't feel it has the same effect or impact without the bevel emboss effect, so on the next draft i may just put that in a again. The blood dripping is something i have trying to improve since the first draft, as it looks to fake and stuck on almost, against the 2D background, i want to make it look like it is coming from the heart, to make it look creepy and horror like, but on this instead of looking like it is dripping it looks like it is solid and hard, i might not use the bevel and emboss effect as it seems to make it look to 3D and hard, but at the same time i like how it stands out, to perfect the blood drip i think i may need to practice with different brushes and effects to get it right. I also changed the Title look, i liked the previous one a lot, but just wanted to practice and try out different effect. I like the way in this one the blood looks like it is dripping on to the title, linking the poster together well, this is something i achieved by liquifying the text and also bevel embossing it, so it fitted the texture of the blood drip. Though i really like this also, i don't think it has the same impact as my original title, as i think it looks to cheesy and not with any style, it also looks to dark so doesn't stand out against the dark. This means i will be going back to my original way of doing the title, but maybe having the dripping falling on to the title, so it looks Incorporated. The pictures are an improvement, as i have had the chance to edit the photos and have used a bigger varity. The size is a bit better, but i still don't think Kate's face is clear enoguh on the poster and dosen't stand out enough, so i would really like to have a second photo shoot to get some better quality of photo.

Editted Images 3

I edited some of the photos i took on our first photo shoot, to see if it would make them anymore eye catching and striking enough to be used as the main images on a poster for the movie or if i will have to take some new images of better quality.

i also opened this image up in Camera Raw, to get the best out of editing it. i turned up the temperature in this image, as i felt she looked to dark against the background, though bringing up the temperature usually makes it look summery, i think it gives this image an eerie glow around Kate. To go against the temperature and to make the image fit more in to the horror genre i turned the exposure down to make it darker, along with bringing the blacks up so that the area around her looked darker and she stood out in the yellow glow, so she was the focus if use on a poster image. i also used the clarity to make the image more defined as the original was slightly unclear.

I opened this image up in Camera Raw, so that i could manipulate the images easily with more control on the outcomes. In this image i changed the temperature, i turned it down, so that Kate's image stood out more in an eerie glow, cold glow making it fit in with the Horror genre as she looks cold and alone. then i turned down the exposures to make it slightly dark along with the blacks, so that it would counteract with the temperature change, and make Kate the main focus, to keep it still fitting in with the horror genre. I then brought up the clarity as the original image is a bit blurred, so i thought this may help to make the image more defined. I think this works well and helps to make it fit more in with the horror genre whilst looking interesting.

With this image i didn't change much on it, as i think i need to re-take this image, as there isn't enough light on the top half of her face, but i still tried to improve it and make it striking.
I turned the saturation and vibrancy all the way down so that the image became black and white, i did this as i thought it may help against the bad lighting on parts of Kate's face, i think it worked well. I also turn up the brightness and blacks to try and make the image look more defined. though i would still like to retake this image, i think this works well.

I also used camera raw on this image. i turned down the temperature, as on the previous image, her outfit seemed to summery and stood out to much for the wrong reasons, now she looks cold and alone, but the image still stands out as she is the main focus, as i have turned down the exposure, so that the things around her look darker and less noticeable. i pulled up the recovery to help with the darkness and the full light to help capture Kate along with the clarity so Kate looks more defined and the main attraction of the image. Other things i did to stop Kate's costume look to summery in the darkness and to fit in with the Horror genre, i turned down the brightness and the vibrant that the image became dull looking, but with Kate in the middle standing out because of turning up the clarity.

with this image i didn't feel the need to edit it to much as it already looked very interesting and eye catching when used on my draft posters. I opened it up in Camera Raw and turned up the temperature to make her look like she has an eerie glow, fitting in with the horror idea of the idea she's a ghost and to stand out. I then turned up the blacks around her to contrast even more with the bright central image.
